So often, parents come to our tuition centre hoping that a few hours of tuition alone will give their child the boost they need. Don’t get me wrong — getting tuition from a subject expert helps massively! — but tuition alone isn’t the answer.
What many parents neglect is that they could have upwards of 10 hours a week of FREE study time if they set up a better weekly schedule.
If your child has lots of extracurricular activities, this can be a challenge. Keeping your child busy is encouraged — whether it’s religious studies after school, learning an instrument or sports — but if these activities leave little or no time for mastering their core subjects, you have to question: how realistic is it to expect improvement at school?
What you should aim for:
Try to find at least 2-3 hours in the week to revisit what your child has done in school and/or tuition. Repetition is key.
Spend at least 1-2 hours per week targeting their specific areas of weakness, based on step 1 above.
Let’s talk about this in more detail below.
1. Revising topics & extending knowledge
Repetition is key to mastering any skill or knowledge. If your child is doing fractions at school and does their homework but doesn’t do any further practise thereafter, chances are the knowledge won’t stick.
The only way for them to get better and become high performers is to keep practising until fractions — or any subject — until your child can apply their knowledge at will.

To achieve this, you want to carve out time in the week so that they can do plenty of practice questions based on what they’ve learnt at school or tuition.
Let’s say your child was doing comprehension tasks is one of our Primary English classes for example; in the next 1-2 days, you should revisit that same work (as a refresher) and then ask your child to complete some further comprehension questions. You can either use a workbook for their age or download some free resources from the internet; it really doesn’t matter as long as they’re putting in the time to repeat the skill.
As long as they are trying their best and focusing, you should see improvement when revisiting those topics in future.
Now, as mentioned before, things get tricky if your child has a packed up routine with a mix of extracurricular activities throughout the week. Let’s talk about that…
2. Prioritise extracurricular activities — and be willing to change them!
Firstly, there is no one-size-fits-all approach here. I’ve come across children who attend religious studies from Monday to Friday after school, play sports over the weekend, attend our tuition classes once a week and are still high performers.
Equally, you’ll find children who simply can’t handle that sort of schedule and their school performance drops if they have such a busy week!
It’s critical that you as a parent understand your child’s individual needs and tailor their routine accordingly.
You can continue taking your child to football training 3 times a week, but if they are academically falling behind you will have to re-evaluate your priorities and make time for them to study.

By following these two simple steps, you’re giving your child a better opportunity to improve their performance at school and boost their confidence.
